Post-operative lymphatic drainage session in a calm treatment room

At The Natural Sculpt, our post-operative recovery treatments are individually tailored to your procedure, stage of recovery and how your body is presenting. Whether you've undergone liposuction, 360 liposuction, a BBL, tummy tuck or another suitable cosmetic procedure, we'll create a recovery plan designed around you.

01Why aftercare

Why post-operative aftercare?

Following cosmetic surgery, swelling, fluid retention, tenderness and changes in the texture of the tissue can occur as part of the recovery process. Appropriate post-operative care may help support your recovery by:

  • Encouraging lymphatic drainage
  • Supporting the management of post-operative swelling and fluid retention
  • Improving comfort during recovery
  • Supporting healthy tissue mobility
  • Helping manage areas of firmness as healing progresses
  • Supporting the appearance of your surgical results
  • Identifying changes that may need to be referred back to your surgeon or medical team

Post-operative recovery is not one-size-fits-all. Your treatment should evolve as your body heals.

02Our approach

More than just lymphatic drainage.

Post-operative care isn't simply about booking the same lymphatic massage every week. Your body can change significantly throughout the different stages of recovery.

During the earlier stages, treatment may focus predominantly on gentle lymphatic drainage and swelling management. As healing progresses, and only where appropriate, your treatment plan may incorporate additional techniques to address developing firmness, restricted tissue mobility or other post-operative concerns.

This is why every session at The Natural Sculpt is adapted according to how your body presents on that day.

03MLD

Manual lymphatic drainage.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage, commonly known as MLD, is a gentle technique designed to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body's lymphatic system.

Following surgery, temporary disruption to normal lymphatic drainage can contribute to swelling and fluid accumulation. Post-operative MLD may be used to support the management of this swelling and help your body through the recovery process.

Unlike a traditional massage, MLD uses gentle, controlled movements rather than deep or aggressive pressure.

04Swelling

Understanding post-operative swelling.

Swelling, or oedema, is common following many cosmetic surgical procedures and can sometimes make your initial surgical result difficult to see. You may notice:

  • Puffiness or fullness
  • One area appearing more swollen than another
  • Temporary changes in your body shape
  • Fluid retention
  • Areas feeling firm or different in texture
  • Fluctuations in swelling throughout the day

Recovery isn't always linear. Some days you may appear more swollen than others. Our role is to support your recovery appropriately while allowing your body the time it needs to heal.

05Fibrosis

Fibrosis and post-operative firmness.

As the body heals following procedures such as liposuction, some clients may develop areas of firmness, thickened tissue, adhesions or changes in tissue texture. These changes are often described by clients as:

  • Hard areas
  • Lumps
  • Ridges
  • Tightness
  • Uneven texture
  • Areas that feel "stuck"

Not every lump or firm area after surgery is fibrosis, which is why appropriate assessment is important. Where suitable, and once you have reached an appropriate stage of healing, your recovery plan may be adjusted to address tissue firmness and mobility.

We do not recommend aggressive treatment simply because an area feels hard. Your stage of recovery, symptoms and surgical history must always be considered first.

06Treatments

Our post-op recovery treatments.

Depending on your procedure, stage of recovery and individual needs, your sessions may incorporate different modalities.

  • 01

    Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Gentle techniques used to support lymphatic flow and the management of post-operative swelling.

  • 02

    Therapeutic Ultrasound

Where clinically appropriate and at a suitable stage of recovery, therapeutic ultrasound may be incorporated into your treatment plan to support soft-tissue management.

  • 03

    Radiofrequency

At an appropriate stage of healing, radiofrequency may be incorporated into selected recovery programmes to support tissue quality and the appearance of the treated area.

  • 04

    Red Light Therapy

A non-invasive modality that may be incorporated into selected recovery sessions as part of your wider treatment programme.

  • 05

    Advanced Tissue Techniques

As your recovery progresses, additional manual or device-assisted techniques may be considered where appropriate to support areas of firmness and restricted tissue mobility.

Not every treatment is appropriate immediately after surgery. We will never use a modality simply because it is included within a package, your treatment is selected according to your individual recovery.

07Levels of support

Standard and advanced recovery.

We offer different levels of post-operative support depending on your stage of recovery and individual concerns.

Standard Recovery

Designed for clients primarily requiring lymphatic and swelling-management support during their recovery. Your sessions focus on appropriate post-operative manual techniques and may include additional non-invasive recovery support depending on your selected treatment.

Advanced Recovery

Designed for clients who may require a more comprehensive approach as their recovery progresses. Advanced sessions may incorporate a combination of manual lymphatic drainage and appropriate technologies such as therapeutic ultrasound and radiofrequency, depending on your healing stage and suitability.

During your consultation, we'll recommend which option is most appropriate for you.

08Coverage

360 Recovery

Our 360 Recovery treatments are designed specifically for clients recovering from surgery around areas such as the abdomen, waist, flanks and back.

Rather than focusing on one isolated area, we consider how swelling and tissue changes are presenting across your surgical treatment area. Your session is adapted according to your procedure, recovery stage and individual needs.

Full Body Recovery

For clients requiring more comprehensive post-operative support, our Full Body Recovery options allow additional time to work across multiple appropriate treatment areas.

This may be particularly suitable for clients who have undergone multiple procedures or who require a more extensive recovery plan. We'll advise whether 360 or Full Body Recovery is most suitable during your consultation.

09Your plan

How many sessions will I need?

There is no universal number of post-operative sessions. Your recommended treatment plan will depend on factors including:

  • The procedure you've undergone
  • The extent of surgery
  • How recently you had surgery
  • Your individual healing response
  • The amount and distribution of swelling
  • Tissue firmness and mobility
  • Your surgeon's recommendations
  • Your overall recovery progress

Some clients require a shorter period of support, while others benefit from a longer programme that evolves alongside their recovery. This is why we recommend starting with a complimentary consultation call rather than choosing a package without guidance.

10Timing

When can I start post-op treatment?

The appropriate time to begin post-operative treatment depends on your surgery, your surgeon's instructions, your health and how your recovery is progressing.

We will ask when and where you had surgery, which procedures were performed and whether you've experienced any complications. Where necessary, we may ask you to obtain clearance or further guidance from your surgical team before treatment.

Your surgeon and medical team remain responsible for your surgical and medical care. Our treatments are complementary recovery services and are not a replacement for medical treatment.

11First visit

What happens during your first appointment?

Your first appointment begins with an assessment. We'll discuss your surgery, recovery so far, current concerns and what you would like support with.

We'll also assess the areas being treated and determine which techniques are appropriate for your current stage of recovery. Your treatment is then tailored accordingly.

As your body continues to heal, your treatment plan can be adapted from session to session.

12Beyond recovery

Your recovery doesn't end when the swelling goes down.

For some clients, the focus of treatment changes as recovery progresses.

Once you are sufficiently healed and post-operative concerns have settled, you may want to focus more specifically on definition, contour and body sculpting. Where appropriate, we can transition your treatment plan from recovery-focused sessions into our non-surgical body sculpting programmes.

This allows us to support you through different stages of your journey rather than treating recovery and body contouring as completely separate processes.

13Safety

Your safety comes first.

Post-operative massage should never replace medical assessment. We may postpone treatment and ask you to contact your surgeon, GP, NHS 111 or emergency services where appropriate if you present with symptoms that could indicate a complication.

Seek urgent medical advice for

  • Sudden or rapidly worsening swelling
  • Significant redness, heat or increasing pain
  • Fever or feeling systemically unwell
  • Pus, unusual discharge or concerns regarding infection
  • Wound opening or concerning wound changes
  • New calf pain or significant one-sided leg swelling
  • Chest pain
  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Fainting or other severe/unexplained symptoms

If you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 999.

Never wait for a post-operative massage appointment if you are concerned that something is medically wrong.
